No Email And No Cellphones

Do you remember a time when email didn't exist and virtually no one had cellphones?  Oh, those were the days.  I enjoyed not feeling pressure to see things and reply within nanoseconds.  I don't actually feel pressure to do these things, but I am tired of having to explain myself.

I do not reply to texts immediately because I'm doing something, my phone isn't nearby, or I'm somewhere without service.  I think it's very rude to check your phone and reply to texts when out with friends or on dates.  So yes, those 15 minutes I was gone?  I could have also been on a date with another guy.

  1. Why the self-righteous tone? It's perfectly fine if someone DOES respond to texts right away. It doesn't mean they don't have a life or that they are rude to their company, it could mean they prioritize communication. It's also fine if you choose not to look at your phone often, but I don't think it makes you a better person.

I'm a parent to a child with special needs. I ALWAYS have my phone handy, and will answer the phone even if I were having dinner with the Obamas, if I thought my child needed me.

    1. You appear to be a reasonable person. Yes, wonderful that you are very responsive when people reach out to you. So my question for you, would you get bent out of shape if someone doesn't reply to you in nanoseconds (which has nothing to do with your child)? That was the point of this post.

    2. I'm not getting the "self righteous" tone in this post tbh. You clearly state how YOU feel and stuff. Not that you are a better person for it. I think anon was projecting.

    3. Thanks, Jurgen! I didn't think I was using a "self righteous" tone either. Arguing with negative contributors has become tiresome

  2. I don't think it's rude to check your phone when out with friends or on a date if context calls for it, like if your date is in the bathroom or you're with good friends who aren't fussy about that sort of thing.

Some people like not being reachable and not responding right away, that is their prerogative. The overwhelming majority of people in my life are responsive, and I appreciate it.

I'm grateful for the convenience technology brings. There are busy people in my life or people who live thousands of miles away, and without texting or pausing to send a picture of something I'm doing, those relationships would have faded a long time ago.

    1. Have you ever been in a restaurant and seen a group of people sitting there, every single one on their cell phones for the entire time? I see that a bit too much
