Online Dating Observations

I've chatted with some guy friends and have learned most online dating girls are "foodies" and "love travel."

Things that I am not a fan of (this applies to guys):
  • Motorcycles
  • Jumping out of planes, off cliffs, etc. because how often do these guys really do this?
  • Posing in front of a car (even worse, a car that the guy does not own)
  • "Love the outdoors" or "love staying active"
I wonder if guys are saying things like "love the outdoors" because they really do.  Or, are they saying it to impress the ladies?  When I see "love the outdoors," I am very turned off because that spells a life of camping, getting up at the crack of dawn (literally), getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, etc.

Yes, loving the outdoors would impress ladies who love the outdoors; what percentage of ladies are very into the outdoors?

  1. I agree with all of your list! I like if a guy is into working out, but as soon as hunting/fishing/mudding/camping/4-wheeling is mentioned...total turn off! The kind of guy that expects every lady to do be up to doing yucky "roughing it" activities is crazy...I wouldn't ever ask a guy to go shopping or get pedicures with me!

    1. Great point about the shopping and pedicures! I would hate for a guy to go shopping with me. Couples need to have their own "things."

  2. I love the outdoors and camping, however the (short) time I tried online dating I found that many guys who wrote that they loved it really didn't do much in the outdoors. I did more than them! Like you said I think a lot of them were trying to impress the ladies. Also the guys in my area seem to like to have pictures of themselves with fish that they caught. Why? I know a few ladies that like to fish, but most of us can do without it.

    1. I'd be quite psyched if a guy into the outdoor turned out to be indoorsy. Lol, fish.

  3. I disagree with outdoors/camping. I know a lot of girls who love hiking and camping, and would rather go camp in the woods than trudge around museums in Europe. They still rock dresses and heels, but they have an outdoorsy side.

Plus, in the Bay Area, there really are a lot of people who hike/camp/ski/dive practically every weekend.

I think car pictures are tacky. While I don't care much for motorcycles, I could see why a guy might post that. I know a motorcycle enthusiast who says he couldn't date someone long-term who disliked riding on the back of a motorcycle.

    1. I agree, lots of girls and guys are very into the outdoors. However, it's hard to believe that 99% of all guys are into the outdoors as stated in 99% of all the profiles I've read (I mean, I guess I can say only outdoorsy guys contact me then). I've never seen a profile where the guy talks about his love of watching tv or playing video games on the couch (which I am sure some guys must enjoy - many of my guy friends reeaaaally enjoy these activities).

Interesting on the motorcycles! Thought the guys were trying to be bad ass by mentioning it...

    2. Remember, guys are trying to impress you. It sounds more impressive to say you're into the outdoors than playing video games. I do the same thing; I say that I like yoga even though I go maybe 1x month, because it sounds more appealing than saying I like to browse the clearance rack at Banana Republic. :)

    3. I am super impressed with guys that put their real hobbies on the table. A guy messaged me today; he likes video games and watching tv. Nice!

  4. I love the car posing pictures... They make me laugh. I'm like nice car and they are like oh it's not mine.

  5. I completely agree with your list. Another thing I hate is when guys put up a profile picture of themselves and another girl. It's a bit of a turnoff because to me, it screams "player."

When it comes to outdoors, it's a bit of a turnoff as well. I guess it probably depends on what they mean bu "outdoors." I like zip lining, but crazy stuff like sky diving is a def no. Also, camping is a def no. I'm not a fan of roughing it in the wild LOL!

    1. I agree, photos with girls is a total red flag!

If only guys knew that some girls aren't into the outdoors and see that as a negative, not a positive.

  6. "loving the outdoors" is not really saying much. Everyone I'm sure has something they like to do outdoors, whether it's playing tennis, watching a sunset, going to the beach (all things I don't mind). But then there is also things like, as you mentioned, roughing it in the wild, jumping out of planes, etc, which don't seem very appealing to me either.

    1. Good point! When I hear "loving the outdoors," I think of a guy who goes stir crazy if he is forced to be indoors.

  7. I've helped a few male friends with their profiles, and sometimes love the outdoors means they used to go camping. What drives me nuts (everyone does this) is "I work hard and I play hard" - yes, let's say something as generic as possible.

Now honestly, most people do not write well, and no one except a few weirdos like me actually likes writing their profile!

    1. It would be interesting if you had your friends list all the things they currently enjoy, right? Not kidding, I am much more likely to reply when a guy says he likes watching tv (I like watching tv and am not afraid to admit it...yes, I may have even mentioned it in my profile).

  8. Haha I also dabble in the lovely world of online dating, and I LOVE the outdoors, and have found that the guys who say they love the outdoors never do.
I suggest a hike they would rather watch tv. I suggest a bike ride they want to play video games.
Online dating would be way easier if people would be honest haha

    1. Hmm, maybe I shouldn't ignore the "love outdoors" guys, haha

  9. I actually do love CERTAIN outdoor activities and have actually jumped out of a plane before. However, it's more of a "here and there when the weather is good" activity, not something I strive to do on a weekly basis and it does make me weary if a guy is truely THAT active because I feel like I can't keep up with him.
