I went to the TechCrunch Crunchies award show a few weeks ago. I can sum up the attendees as:
- TechCrunch and VentureBeat employees
- Big names in tech, some brought their bodyguards and dog - Marc Benioff, Travis Kalanick, Jim Goetz, Drew Houston, Elizabeth Holmes, et al
- People with startups - mostly guys
- Gals dressed like they were trying to find boyfriends or "working"
I saw three girls change in the bathroom and doing full hair and makeup. Ladies, couple of things:
- The big names and very successful guys you might be trying to meet do not attend the 2,000+ person afterparty; they have their own, this year, it was sponsored by Yahoo
- Many of the very successful guys are already married
I've been twice and it's definitely the "who's who" of the tech world. The women are all very dressed up. I definitely dressed up and partook in all the mingling afterwards. I was there for work so I couldn't get too wild, but I think in general it's not a bad way to meet someone - a large concentration of smart dudes in one place.
ReplyDeleteP.S. It's way better than attending TechCrunch Disrupt, which is super nerdy/techy. At least for the Crunchies, the big names are there and people are a little bit dressier.
DeleteThe two years you went, did you meet good dudes? I could barely move, packed like sardines
DeleteIt was packed but if you stay later as the crowd thins out, it was easier to talk. Since I was there under a semi-work capacity (i.e. all of our C-level execs were there), I felt uncomfortable trying to chat up someone who could have turned out to be a cilent!
