Trying Too Hard

I was in CVS late last night and felt someone staring at me.  I took a look and thought, GROSS!  I went into a different aisle and he followed me.  I ran to the front where the registers were and got the f*ck out as fast as I could.

I don't think he was dangerous, just gross and someone I'd like to never see again.  He's an older guy, late 50s or early 60s and we met at a combined San Francisco Ballet, Opera, and Symphony party.  I remember meeting him, he pulled a humongous fake diamond toy ring out of his blazer and "proposed" to me.  Yes, trying too hard!  And, it was NOT funny.  He also kept trying to put his arm around me and whisper in my ear - a good way to lose an arm and get a black eye.

  1. Haha - love it! What was he thinking?! Older guys trying to court a much, much younger woman are simply gross - and with the joke diamond no less! Wait, what if it were a real diamond? just for the argument sake... Would you look at him more favorably and thought he was less gross? Be honest! :)

    1. It be hard to see him as less gross, he's got the greasy car salesman aura

    2. Yuk! Once when I was in my 20s, a 50 plus guy asked me out... Come on! They have no shame.

    3. For me, it depends on the guy. Some 50+ guys are nice, is Brad Pitt is over 50 now? The way they approach is very important, non threatening and polite vs. greasy and smarmy

    4. Well, most men are not Brad Pitt... And for a 50+ year old guy to approach a 20+ woman like it's nothing unusual is waaay presumptuous. I think they don't get the distinction between when a woman is just friendly or flirting... I think that's what led to my "incident". We were taking the same (French) class in community college, chatted at breaks and on the way to our cars... I felt "safe" because of the age difference. He felt... well, he probably took my friendliness as "interested"... again, yuk.

    5. I agree, 50+ year old men should not make it a habit of thinking they can get a 20 something year old woman, LOL. Brad Pitt, sure ;-)

That's so funny, I was talking about friendliness towards men with a girlfriend and we came to the conclusion that men think we are interested when we are simply being nice, saying bless you when he sneezes, et al

    6. Yes, exactly! It's all black and white! Friendly=Interested; unfriendly=bitch :)

    7. I read this somewhere a while ago, something about men being more likely to assume women are interested when they aren't. Yes!

    8. I think men have to err on the side of assuming that women are interested since they always make that first move. Otherwise nothing much would ever get accomplished.

    9. LOL, OG, I can see that. What is the best method to say "not interested" when actually saying "not interested" doesn't work?
