SF Fraternities and Sororities

SF has what I call fraternities and sororities (Guardsmen, Spinsters, various private clubs like Pacific Union, Metropolitan Club, The Francisca Club, etc). I've heard initiation tasks can be similar to what undergrads do when pledging a frat.

I am a not part of these groups and have not met any members of the older clubs (like Pacific Union). I have met some of the Guardsmen (they are typically younger guys, probably 22-45 years old). I am sure collectively, they do nice things like help underprivileged children. However, as individuals, they are arrogant jerks who think they are hot sh*t. I met nine of them at a bar in the Marina a while ago. One guy was very sweet, the other eight were dbags. Even the sweet guy was arrogant, but he was at least trying to be nice and humble. They other guys acted like us girls were lucky to be talking to them and we should be bowing down and kissing their feet

In college, I was in the Greek system and as arrogant as some of those frat boys were, a majority of them were really nice. I'm being completely serious when I say these clubs in SF may help the underprivileged, but they definitely serve as more proof that most SF guys suck.

  1. I'm increasingly convinced that the crowd you run with...maybe run with is a bad term. But maybe the pool of guys you normally run into is the problem.

I'm curious what neighborhoods you generally hang out in. I never go to the Marina or Polk, nor do I hang out downtown, and I only hit up SOMA when I go to City Beer. I avoid these spots because the guys are usually just over-privileged douche bags and the women are generally pretty stuck up....IMO.

    1. Hey J, think you are on to something! Yeah, I usually hang out downtown, Polk St, North Beach, SOMA, and, The Marina (on occasion). What parts of town do you think I should check out?

    2. Well, anywhere but there....hah! It really depends on what you like to do. The Mission has it's own stigma but there is always a good mix of people so you're not always going to run into the same type of guy. There's always the quieter parts of town like the Inner Richmond and Sunset areas. They have some nice bars and some very good restaurants. Divisadero intersecting Hayes is really blowing up lately. I call it the mini-Mission.

I tend to keep Polk and SOMA in my back pocket because you still get a bit of a mixed crowd. But I'll never go downtown or or to the Marina. North Beach can be fine...I love La Trappe up there....but it's such a pain to get to for me.

  2. I agree - I live in SF and my friends (mostly lawyers and tech people) avoid the Marina like the plague.

    1. Thanks, Anonymous! I'm going to sound like a major wuss...I heard Dogpatch and Portrero are dangerous areas (like shootings take place and such)

  4. I can't say I recommend anywhere for meeting guys, b/c I have not had success anywhere in SF in that regard. All I know is that everyone I've met says they avoid the Marina b/c of all the asshole former frat boys/sorority girls. I usually meet friends in the mission and financial district - those are pretty central. I think you would killed for mentioning an adult frat in the mission.

    1. Want to know something insane that I just remembered? I know two couples that met in Marina bars and ended up getting married. One couple started off as a one night stand, not sure about the other couple
